Genre that enables the player to take command of a nation/army and compete against computer-controlled or human opponents in real time. Some games, such as the WW2 themed Sudden Strike simply focus on the battle aspect but most games also require the players to handle their faction's economy and manage buildings. RTS games usually provide the player with both single missions and campaigns. Grand strategy games, such as the Hearts of Iron or Europa Universalis series (both historical strategy games) put the player in charge of one of the game world's numerous nations (in the case of the cited examples, a real world nation).
